Karangahan nin Dunong kan Albay in Bicol University

As part of the celebration of the Karangahan Green Christmas spearheaded by Albay Provincial Governor Joey Sarte Salceda, the Karangahan nin Dunong kan Albay was held last December 8 to 9 at Bicol University as one of its highlights. The activity was sponsored by the Provincial Government of Albay (PGA) through the Provincial Education Department (PED) in cooperation with Bicol University and the Department of Education-Albay. The event was an Academic Olympics showcasing the best of the best in Albay in the Kinder, Elementary, and High School levels.

The activity was conducted with the hope of achieving a culture of and passion for excellence among Albayano students, discovering talents, and preparing the youngsters for regional, national, and international academic competitions.

The Academic Olympics was an individual competition in various subject areas in the three levels, participated in by 34 schools in the Kinder level, 52 in the elementary level and 29 in the high school level. The individual winners received a trophy, certificate of merit, and cash prizes. The champion school for each level received P50,000.00, courtesy of Governor Salceda.

The following were the winners for all categories per level:

Kinder Level: Picture and Word Recognition- Kiersten Ann Serre (Mary's Child Science Oriented School); Numeracy Skills - Angel Dominique Lansi (Legazpi Hope Christian School); Patterns and Analogy - Jiah Mae Buenaflor (St. Nicholas Learning Center)
Champion Schools: Legazpi Hope Christian School and COLORS Preschool

Elementary Level: Mathematics - Rhunzted Cyrus Completo (Ibalon Central School); Science - Arbel Angelo Perete (Mary's Child Science Oriented School);
Spelling - Irish Ajero (St. Raphael School);
HEKASI - Jonas Alcoy (Ligao West Elementary School); Champion School - Legazpi Hope Christian School

High School Level: Mathematics - Jervy Anne Romero (Ligao National High School); Science - John Bert Onrubia (Tabaco National High School); Araling Panlipunan - Norman Manlangit (Ligao National High School); Champion School - Ligao National High School

The Karangahan nin Dunong kan Albay was another "first" among the many initiatives of the PGA, and is an event to look forward to in 2012.

The event was attended by the provincial governor himself, who also gave an inspiring message to all the contestants. BU President Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya, Vice Governor Harold Imperial, Board Members Embestro and Glenda Bongao, and other officials of PGA and Bicol University were likewise present. (Samuel C. Bobiles/GLO@BU)
